  1. SYMA - SynthManager   distribution: 91-11-14
  2. ------------------------------------------------------------
  3. SyMa is the most advanced(!) sound-patch editor for Yamaha Tx81z and 
  4. Casio MT260. It uses GUI under MS-Windows 3.x. I had used it in
  5. my home environment since june-91, so I hope it is free from bugs. 
  6. Some screens are slow - there are lot of controls (buttons, scrolls, lists)
  7. on every screen, thus windows uses lot of cpu power to draw them!
  8.  
  9. I wrote SyMa to solve two problems and learn something new:
  10. - to get a good patch manager
  11. - to simplify programming the tx81z (I hate the original 10-button control)
  12. - to learn ms-windows programming
  13. - to have fun with c++

  24. 0. System Requirements
  25.    - MS-Windows 3.0
  26.    - Roland MPU-401 compatible midi adapter (e.g. MPU-IPC-T)
  27.    - PC (386DL/SX...486 recommended)
  28.    - Yamaha TX81Z  (should also work with DX21/27/100, but I've never tested)
  29.    - Casio MT-260 or another using PROGRAM CHANGE as voice selection.
  30.    - mouse supported by windows
  31.    - optional printer
  32.    - disk space 400k

  34. 1. Installing

  36.    Create a directory for syma:
  37.     md c:\syma
  38.     cd c:\syma
  39.  
  40.    Copy all the distribution files to the directory, or unpack
  41.    the zip or zoo archive. You should have the following files:

  52.    Start windows.
  53.     from program manager select NEW
  54.     ensure (x) program item
  55.     click OK 
  56.     click on BROWSE
  57.     select directory where SyMa was installed (ex: c:\syma)
  58.     click on tx81z.exe
  59.     Select File+Configure
  60.     Enter your config parameters, specially the home directory!

  62.    That's all, now click on the SyMa-Tx81z icon and experiment...

  64.    The distribution package contains four voice banks and a performance
  65.    bank (a.vce .... d.vce a.prf). They correspond to the factory
  66.    setup of tx81z. They are good to start with, when making own voices.
  67.    You can always fetch the same files from tx81z.
  68.  
  69.    To enter a bank use File OpenBank from the voice manager or the 
  70.    performance manager.

  72.    Unfortunately, SyMa will NOT remind you to save banks when they
  73.    have been modified and you leave the program.

  75.    Use help in SyMa to get a short intro. 
  76.    I've observed a small bug when using help imediately after installing
  77.    SyMa - so if the system cannot find the help file simply exit SyMa and
  78.    enter again. Some menus also do not invoke help. The Help tool
  79.    always starts from the index (some more development left...).

  81.    Note that the right mouse button invokes a graphical presentation of
  82.    the most important parameters in the voice editor!

  84. 2. Connecting TX81z to PC

  86.    If you want to fetch patches from synth both in and out cords
  87.    must be connected!

  111. 3. Trouble shooting
  112.  
  113.    Check MIDI-cable connections.
  114.    Check that the used mpu address is the same as strapped on your MPU-board.
  115.  
  116.    When sending voices to synth, it seems to go too fast for tx81z midi!?
  117.    So send the voice again if it sounds strange/metalic, it helps.

  119.    Some screens do not invoke help (cosmetic problem... sorry).

  121. 4. win.ini
  122.  
  123.    SyMa maintains the win.ini file in the windows directory. The sample
  124.    contents of the used entry follows. You do not need to do anything with
  125.    the win.ini file. I give this chapter in case you ask...

  127.    home is the place where SyMa will keep your patches and voices, and where
  128.    it finds the help file.
  129.  
  130.    MIDIchanel is which channel is set up on tx81z as the receive channel 
  131.    (It must match! NB if you change the value on tx81z from SyMa (setup 
  132.    menu) or directly on tx81z you loose connection until they match again.

  134.    MPUtrack defines which track in MPU is used for traffic - wihtout 
  135.    importance, unless you run other midi programs simultaneously.

  137.    Printer is the printer you use from SyMa.
  138.  
  139.    PortMPU must be value strapped on yout MPU-board (330 is factory default).
